Ever wonder who the person pictured on a baseball card really is? Stats and a pretty face are only part of the picture...sometimes we need to dig a bit deeper to truly understand.

Welcome to Eight And Three Quarters Inches Squared, where we try to see who really is that person inside that piece of 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch card-stock.

John Candelaria - The Real Candy Man

1988 TOPPS Traded
#25T

Name: John Candelaria
Position: Pitcher
Teams(s): Pittsburgh Pirates, California Angels, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Montreal Expos, Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates

John Candelaria had a very successful career, spending 19 years on 8 teams at the major league level (twice with the Pirates).  His journey in the majors was so compelling that several movies were made to document his life, appropriately entitled "Candyman".  Although the movie studio took some liberties and artistic license, the overall feel of his story was translated nicely to the screen.  The role of Candelaria was filled by veteran actor Tony Todd, who's turn as the lanky pitcher was lauded by critics and fans alike.

Where are they now.

Currently Candelaria works for Major League Baseball as a special adviser to the Office Of Aesthetics.  His purview are the high hat bylaws.
